Back to work.

When the going gets this tough, you feel no shame calling Mom for help. She got here Tuesday, and is helping keep the lazy nurses at the nightmarish Palisades Nursing Home & Baby Factory on their toes while we get him through this critical post-surgical phase of his October Miracle. After 8 days out of work, I felt like I had to make an effort to get here, even though they have been very understanding so far.

I feel guilty, of course, not being there to help. To wash his lips, help him rinse, force him to say “I love you” with his strained real voice instead of the whisper he has had since the breathing tube was pulled out. His surgeon is very nervous about his recovery period, but I like it when he’s nervous. That means he’s on it, and he’s seen him through much murkier shit than this over the last week and a half.

He is doing very well so far, considering. There is more to get through, but forging ahead with him will be a treat and an honor compared to the very real alternative we just thwarted somehow.
