I just read on the old intranet portal that our law firm has taken on the pro bono case of Caster Semenya, the South African runner who was recently discovered to have more complicated gender issues than the organized sports world is equipped to absorb yet. I find this case remarkable for a number of reasons, but primarily I am impressed with how their love of sports (and winning, natch) has trumped the gender issue for most South Africans. They seem to be fiercely proud of their star runner, and aren’t going to give up on her just because she happens to have some male parts. If I were an intersexed person struggling with the myriad issues that face that type of situation, I’d be at the track right now practicing.
Related: I honestly can’t decide if I’m attracted to Caster or not. She would certainly make a handsome fella, but there are some gender arenas that even I’m not capable of handling.
